Abstract

The study paper explained barriers that hinder successful implementation of inclusive education for mentally challenged learners in Kiharu Division ofMurang'a North District. A sample of forty regular primary school teachers was purposively selected. The researcher used qualitative design approach to get the information. Questionnaires were used to correct date. The questionnaires targeted regular primary school teachers who deal directly with special needs. Date was then analyzed using statistical methods to alTive to results which were then interpreted m give meaning to the study. From the study, it is evident that learners with special needs are neglected in the inclusive setting or in the mainstream. It creates some kind of stigma in both learners and their parents. Major recommendations include creating of awareness through seminars and workshops to, parents, teachers and the community on matters pertaining inclusive education. The government should sensitize and set up campaigns for educating public and disseminating information about special needs in education through mass media, journals and other public publications in order to create enough awareness through out the country. Faculties should also be offered to cater for effective inclusive education.
